Lions Summer Update

by lionsclub

Fellow Lions!

The exec team for UTCLC have been working hard all summer in preparing for the upcoming year. Working like a well oiled machine, we will achieve our goal of betting the community through inspired  service. With Clubs day forthcoming, We are ecstatic with the forthcoming UTSU Clubs day on September 5th and September 11th!

U of T can be quite boring without getting involved, so remember to come check out UTCLC at clubs day to see how you can get involved and give back to the community. At the event, you will be given an opportunity to join UTCLC in the upcoming CIBC Run for the Cure. Last year, the Lions members volunteer as part of the spirit squad to cheer on the runners. Members continue to speak of this amazing event! Stay tuned for more updates regarding this year’s CIBC Run for the Cure!

UTCLC’s Music for Aphasia: Benefit Concert

by lionsclub

Thank you to everyone who came out to UTCLC’s Music for Aphasia: Benefit Concert!
We were able to raise a lot of money for our beneficiary, the Aphasia Institute, but more importantly we were able raise and spread awareness of Aphasia to many UofT students in attendance.

A huge thank you goes out to the New College Student Council (NCSC) who helped us plan and organize the event. Thank you also goes out to Open Koncept Studios for taking photographs and videos of the performances.

For those of you reading this who are unsure about what aphasia is, please take some time to visit the Aphasia Institute website to learn more about the disorder as well as what the institute does to help the 100,000 Canadians who have Aphasia.

by lionsclub

Thanks to all those who attended our January general meeting
For those who could not attend, here are some updates and events:

1. Yonge Street Mission: Youth Drop-In

UTCLC went to the Yonge Street Mission for their Youth Drop-In to volunteer our time and effort. The YSM is a not-for-profit Christian organization that assists people of all ages to reach their maximum potential by providing services that respond to basic human needs and the need for mutual support. More information can be found here: http://www.ysm.ca/volunteers/groups/.

During the Drop-In we served meals to 75 teens as well as engaged in several other activities.
A huge thank you goes out to those individuals who were able to make it and donate their time.

2. United Against Cancer: Relay for Life

UTCLC will be having a team set up to participate for United Against Cancer’s Relay for Life event, which will be held Tuesday February 21st, 2012 here at the St. George campus. If you are interested in signing up for the event and participating, please send an email to our Vice President, Lion Yi-Min (yimin.chun@utoronto.ca), who will be organizing our team.

At our general meeting, UTCLC discussed about several other events that we are planning for the coming semester.

UPCOMING EVENTS

– UTCLC Social –

The weather is getting colder, finals are approaching, and the semester is coming to an end…
Oh, if only there was some sort of event or social activity to brighten up the coming weeks…
NOT TO FEAR!
UTCLC will be having another socials event! Pool, anyone?
Here are the details:

Annex Billiards Club
507 Bloor Street West; just two blocks east of Bathurst Station.
Thursday November 24th @ 6PM

Depending on how long we decide to stay there, prices will vary — so, it’ll probably be a little over $10 per person. Please email our socials director, Lion Marcus, at mhcampbell27@hotmail.com. We need a sense of how many people are coming just in case we need to reserve tables, but for the most part the place should be able to accommodate us

– Yonge Street Mission (YSM) –

UTCLC is planning a volunteering event  for the Youth Street Mission (YSM) for the month of January.
The YSM is a not-for-profit Christian organization that assists people of all ages to reach their maximum potential by providing services that respond to basic human needs and the need for mutual support. More information can be found here: http://www.ysm.ca/volunteers/groups/
The organization has volunteering opportunities called the “Youth Drop-In” where we would join roughly 75 youth from ages 12 to 18 by serving and partaking in a meal and participating in group activities (i.e. sports).
This is a great opportunity for the club to give back to the community and help out with youth who are similar in age to us university students.
More information will be provided closer to the date.

UPCOMING EVENTS

– UTCLC Social –

Snakes and Lattes
600 Bloor St. W; just west of Bathurst.
Thursday October 20th @ 6PM
So, our first UTCLC social will be at Snakes and Lattes! It’s an awesome cafe where you can choose from a humongous variety of board games to play with.
It costs five dollars per person to play the board games (for as long as they want), and most of the food/beverage items are under five as well.
We will be meeting in front of the Bata Shoe Museum (located on the corner of Bloor and St. George) at around 5:50PM and head down to the cafe from there. Otherwise, you can definitely meet up with us at the cafe 🙂
We ask that you email Lion Marcus (our Socials Director) at mhcampbell27@hotmail.com to confirm your attendance for the event.
We need to get a sense of how many people will be coming with us.
Looking forward to hanging out with you guys! 🙂

– UTCLC Halloween Bake Sale –

We will be having a Halloween-themed Bake Sale for the last week of October.
All proceeds will be used to help fund a portion of our administrative costs.
If you are interested in helping out with baking and preparing for the sale, please email Lion Carly (one of our Fundraising Directors) at carlyching@gmail.com.
